1. DOORMAT USING OLD CLOTHES
OUR RESEARCH
- When consumers throw away clothing in the garbage, not only does it waste money and resources, but it can take more than 200 years for the materials to decompose in a landfill. Cloth waste account for almost 5% of all landfill spaces. The recycled post consumer cloth waste is barely 15% annually, and thus, a huge 85% of the waste ends up in landfills. During the decomposition process, cloths generate greenhouse gas methane and release toxic chemicals and dyes into groundwater and soil. Therefore there is a need to reuse the old clothes by making sustainable sturdy products.
- Materials required : Old clothes, thread, needle, scissors
- Procedure :
- Cut clothes into strips.
- Take 3 strips in hand and tie them together at one end.
- Tightly braid the 3 strips of cloth from the tied end.
- Trim the excess length of the strip at the end and using a needle and thread stitch the ends.
- Starting from one end, roll the braided coil in circles to form the mat.
- Using a needle stitch the roll continuously with adjacent circle while rolling.
- Once you have completed rolling stitch the end of the mat and finish.
- Conclusion – By using old clothes we can make sustainable products thereby reduce the cloth waste that goes to landfills and protect the environment.
2. CLOTH BAG USING OLD T-SHIRTS
OUR RESEARCH
The waste generated by producing and consuming clothes is a major concern. When it is thrown away, 73% of fabric waste will be burned or buried in landfill. These trends are damaging the environment. Therefore, reusing of old clothes by making sturdy products is a good idea to reduce such waste.

- Materials required : Sharp scissors, old t-shirt, needles, threads
- Procedure :
- Cut off the sleeves and the neckline.
- Determine the depth of the bag.
- Then cut the fringe.
- Tie the fringe.
- Finish the bag by tying knots at the top of the handles or tie some of the scrap fabric on as embellishments.
- Conclusion – Recycling or reusing is better than throwing things away. It is best to make something like a t-shirt bag that can be used over and over again.
