Here are the excerpts from the interview ~
1. Who founded the organisation? When and Where did it start?
Ans) The organisation , 'Unilever' was founded by William lever and George Shicht. William lever was initially the founder of a British manufacturing company 'Lever Brothers'
and George Shicht was the founder of a Dutch company, 'Margarine Unie'. They both signed an agreement to create Unilever on second September, 1929 in the United Kingdom.
2. Apart from India ,Britain, Netherlands does the company have presence in any other country? As we know Unilever is a very big company, which is its best product?
Ans) Unilever has presence in more than 150 countries and it is still expanding.
As there are so many products and brands it is difficult to tell which is the bestselling product. It depends on the category, all products are categorized into groups.
for eg. Lipton ice tea is the number 2 selling beverage in the world after Coca-Cola and Lipton ice tea is predominantly sold by Pepsi. in ice-creams magnum is the bestselling product in the world
dove is also a huge product in women’s' category and there many more products
3. How many research units does the company have and where are they located?
Ans) The company has six research units. Two of them are located in London, one each in the U.S.A,Netherlands, Bangalore and Shanghai.
4. What kind of research is required to produce FMCGs?
Ans)As many products are produced in the company. Each product has its own requirements. People in Unilever are Mechanical Engineers, Chemical Engineers, material scientists, Micro Biologists, Bio Chemists, Food scientists, chemists, physicists, Neuro Scientists, artists and even psychologists. Psycologists help to understand the consumer’s mind.
5.What is the ecological policy of the company?
Ans )Environmental policy instruments from the company’s commitment to manage its overall impact on the environment in a responsible way. Unilever too addresses sustainability. There are many commitments made by Unilever to follow the ecological policies; such as, usage of only recyclable plastic, usage of more plant-based products, reusing water as much as possible. Waste material is not disposed into the environment.
6.How does the company try to save and conserve energy and resources?
Ans )Along with following the environmental policies, it also tries to conserve and save energy. The company aims at increasing its efficiency, as it helps in saving a lot of energy. e.g. – repairing machines time to time. The company achieves 100% renewable energy and relies on renewable energy like solar energy and wind energy. Coal based energy is not used as it is harmful to the environment.
7.What methods are adopted for waste disposal? Are they eco- friendly?
Ans. Unilever understands the needs of the present and knows its responsibility when it comes to waste disposal along with eco friendly ways. Unilever has a partnership with big supply chain organisations that work for recycling and retrieving plastic. It also believes that the less waste you create and dispose of in the environment, the better it is for the environment. Thus, Unilever has a zero waste policy. The waste water, plastic and degenerated machinery is reused if possible or else recycled. It has been almost 5 years that Unilever hasn't disposed of any waste in the environment.
8.What concrete measures has the company taken to make it more eco-friendly?
Ans. Unilever aims at building a sustainable living environment. It promoted high use of renewable forms of energy like Solar and wind electricity. It is a 100% renewable energy company. It has been part of the top 10 renewable energy users. Unilever hasn't tested on animals past 20 years and has is now aiming at developing a big brand of plant-based goods. To save the environment, Unilever has done a lot of constructive methods. Other than the demotion of deforestation, it is also looking out for a marine substitute for the essential Palm oil. It also focuses on generating none or less carbon footprint. This has been implemented by the project Travel Less Load More. This way, Unilever has adopted various eco-friendly policies which have proved to be of great success.
9.What are the future plans of the company?
Ans. Unilever promises to continue their work as they do presently. They hope to continue with such sustainable policies and not harm the environment. It wants to address the people's needs for the future. It aspires to run an ethical business. Unilever stands by the policy of continuing their practices but hopes to make them more and more efficient day by day.
Conclusion- Unilever is a mega brand in India. Almost every household uses its products. We talked with many people in our families, neighborhood and acquaintances. All are satisfied and happy customers. Their products follow Indian quality norms and standards. It is amazing that they have developed well researched R & D for each of these products exclusively. It helps in quality control and quality assurance and also helps in targeting the future needs of the customers.
