Let's visit our school
Our Research Work
We had an interview with Ram Pawar Sir who is an English faculty at New
English School, Kalus, Tal. Khed, District Pune. He works as a state resource
person on the state level. He also manages many workshops for the English
teachers and teaches them innovative or new comings in their syllabus.
According to him, energy is very important in our day-to-day life, which is very
true. He said, everything is dependent on energy, without energy we can’t do
anything. Particularly when we think of saving energy, it’s the need for time. At
our school, village, and home we have to save energy.
If we save energy, then only we will save ourselves. So, at every step, at every stage at every place, we have to
save energy. Whatever type of energy it maybe we have to save it.
When we asked him our first question about the measures that their school takes
to ensure that energy is being saved.
He said, energy is saved. For electric energy, they had to pay the bill of Mahavitran (the source from where their school gets energy). His school used to have a monthly bill of about Rs. 2000 and yearly bill of Rs.24000. If his school had to save money, they had to save energy.
His school was working on the project for around one and a half years and finally got success. Now, he has both solar energy and electric energy in his school.
Whenever his school has some technical issues with the solar panels, they use
electric energy. But mostly they use solar energy only.
The next we asked him was about the effectiveness of the solar panels at his
school.
His answer to this question was, It’s very effective. According to him and his experience, this method is very effective, particularly in his school. Generally, this project saves his school’s money, and he says that if you have the money you have everything. Saving money is important and for it, one means is saving energy and this project is very effective.
Whatever his school runs on this energy in their school, be it lights, fans, computers, etc. works very well and according to him, it’s the need of time. Every school has to take initiative and should start projects like this in their schools as said by him.
The next question we asked him was- “According to you approximately how
much energy is being saved on an average monthly and yearly?”
In response to this, he said," We have the electric bills at home also you may have seen electric
bills and electricity is measured in units. If you have used a lot of units, then you
have a lot of bills. I told you already about our monthly bill, but after we started
using solar energy our electricity bill is reduced, it's about Rs.300 to Rs.400 per
month. If you have a bill of Rs.300 per month then, the bill is Rs.3600 per year.
Therefore we saved money as well as energy. So, it benefits our school.”
Next, we asked that if this system was conventional and affordable.
He said that, Solar energy is the energy that we get from the sunlight. In all 12 months, this sunlight is not the same. Mostly in monsoon, we get less sunlight because the sky is covered
with clouds and we get less solar energy and in that period, we use electric light
and we get less solar energy so its conventional and mostly its affordable.
In the beginning, you have to pay money to establish this project, it may be the solar
panels and batteries, but later you don't have the expenditure so it is affordable.
We asked him whether the project was going as planned. In answer to this, he
said, “Of course it’s going as per plan. Whatever was our plan to save the electric
light and to use the solar light we have established solar panels on our terrace and
batteries in a separate battery room. So, we get the light we get the energy.”
We asked that when did the school start using this system. He said that their
school started using it one and a half years ago in June 2019.
Next, we asked whether the students are eagerly participating in this project? He
said?
“Well as being a teacher my experience is, the students are so eager for the
innovative ideas. They are not interested in traditional ways they are
interested in innovative ideas and things.
When we started this project the students were so eager to know how we get the light from sun, how will it work? Will the computers, lights, fans run on the solar light? They were very eager in the beginning but as the project went on and everything was on the right path, they
are used to the system now.”
We asked him whether their school is participating in any social activity of saving
energy?
In answer to this he said, “Yes of course it is the need of the time that all
of you as a citizen of India, its everyone's duty to save energy because we get natural energies from coal, petrol and kerosene their stock is limited. One day will come when we all will lose them.
Then what shall we do as we can't do anything without energy?
So, everyone should take the initiative to save the energy and our school is also taking part in different activities of saving energy also we invite some schools and children from neighboring schools and they come with interest to see our project and its very nice that they are very motivated.
They have the thought in their mind that this school is doing then why not we?”
We asked him whether he will recommend this method to other schools, offices,
or industries.
He said Yes, of course, because it’s an ideal project for other schools
also. If we are saving the money, the energy then why not you. Then we keep our
motive that other schools should start such types of projects.
Our final question to him was whether he would like to add something else to save
energy in the school. If yes, what is it?
His final answer was that schools can use wind energy and hydel energy like solar energy and they all are very affordable.
We had a lot of fun talking to him and also, we learned a lot from Ram Pawar
sir.

How methods of saving energy can be brought to everyone’s attention in school?
Methods of saving energy can be brought to everyone’s attention in school by:
• Creating Awareness
• Explaining them the working of the system used in the school to save energy.
• Encouraging students to take part in the project
• Promoting recycling around the school
• Encouraging students to turn off the computers when not in use.
• Create student committees to make sure that energy conservation guidelines are being implemented.
• Recognizing energy saving efforts of staff and teachers to encourage others to join the initiative.
• Promoting the use of fans rather than air conditioners in school.
• Turn off lights when not in use and encourage others to do the same.
• Tell them the importance of saving energy for future
• Appointing an energy monitor who can make sure that no energy is wasted in the classroom.
• Promoting usage of natural light and not keeping the lights on unnecessarily.
• Encouraging the use of bicycles whenever possible.

Research Report
Main question:- How can energy be saved at school in the most effective way?
PROCESS - Saving energy group members conducted research on the most common way in which energy is being saved in most schools. It is the solar panels. We also found some alternatives other than solar panels by which energy can be saved in schools.
We interviewed Ram Pawar Sir who is the English faculty at New English School, Kalus, Pune. He told us about the pros and cons of using solar panels in schools. We asked him questions related to energy saving and also some alternatives of energy saving.
We asked him about the involvement of students in the energy saving and the process of energy saving in their school. We also asked our friends whether they knew about the energy saving methods used by our school, almost everyone knew about it.
RESULTS - We found out that there is a common means used by most schools to save energy which is the solar panels. We also got to know that we can use wind energy, water energy etc. as we use solar energy. We got to know that the need in todays world which is money, can be saved by saving energy.
We got to know many methods which can be used to save energy in the school, like, switching off lights, fans or the smart board whenever not needed, using natural light instead of using the tube lights or bulbs, and many other ways.
As students of our school we should always contribute towards saving energy not in our school but everywhere to save the environment.
OUTCOMES OF THE COLLABORATION WITH THE PARTNER SCHOOL - We collaborated with Baken Park through VC. However, due to Covid-19 pandemic we were facing challenges in communicating with our partner school in Netherlands frequently via email or WhatsApp. We found many things about Netherlands.
Their culture, the type of food they eat, etc. we also shared our country’s information about the culture and tradition with them. It was very nice to know about their country. Talking about the outcomes, we learned and compared the energy saving methods of their country and our country.
We found out that solar panels are common in both the schools.
CONCLUSION A clear conclusion that can be derived is that, energy saving is very important in school as well as at home. We can save a lot of school’s finance as well as the environment. This is a great method to go green.
The most effective as well as affordable way that we found to save energy in school are the solar panels and windmills. Most of the schools use these methods to save energy in the school.
One more way of saving energy at school is to encourage the students to save energy and make them aware of the energy saving methods. It can be done by organising workshops, appointing monitors for the same, etc. There are many ways of saving energy, if we save energy we will save ourselves and the world.

The Conclusion
“How can energy be saved at school?” is a simple yet significant question. We stepped forward to answer this question, and managed to get some impressive results. Taking a closer look at our school’s solar power system, we found out the benefits of using solar energy to generate power over the traditional fossil fuel method. We created posters and videos as awareness activities to aid us in changing the mindsets of people towards saving energy, which turned out to be a huge success. We contacted other schools and noted the measures they take in order to save energy. Then we analyzed the results of our research and concluded that there are a lot of ways to save energy at school.
This was just a small step towards a happy future. We might not have achieved success in absolutely stopping the wastage of energy, but we did our part for the environment, however small it may be. This project has compelled us to pledge for the greener, brighter future of our planet and its residents. Not a future where energy is saved, but a future where energy doesn’t need saving.
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
